Recently, Chengdu’s pilot project for autonomous bus operation was launched, featuring four 6-meter L4 autonomous minibuses newly developed and manufactured by CRRC Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (CRRC EV).
These vehicles support both manual and driverless modes, with a 16-seat capacity designed for short-distance loops and flexible commuting shuttle services. Their intelligent driving system integrates a high-precision sensing matrix combining LiDAR and camera, a high-performance domain controller, and a new-generation AI for planning, control, and BEV perception, enabling them to handle all operating conditions and scenarios of urban public transport. Currently, these vehicles are undergoing road tests and will soon be made available to residents in Chengdu.
The pilot project is co-implemented by Chengdu Public Transport Group and CRRC EV. Their partnership aims to build a full lifecycle management and technology system for autonomous public buses for regular commercial operation. Together, they have developed solutions and operational management system standards covering the entire process: operation services, scheduling and command, inspection and maintenance, and emergency response. They have formulated China’s first guidelines for system integration testing of autonomous bus systems.
