On 11 April 2017, in front of Xu Dazhe, governor of Hunan province and Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of transport of Malaysia, a contract of supply 13 hybrid EMUs and 9 meter-gauge EMUs was signed between CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co, Ltd. and the Ministry of Transport, Malaysia. All EMUs will be delivered by the end of 2018.
The EMUs are specially designed for Malaysia's transportation system. The hybrid EMUs will be equipped with CRRC's self-designed graphene-based supercapacitors, which can power multiple units with greater efficiency and for longer periods. The meter-gauge EMUs are designed for Malaysia's unique meter-gauge rail tracks
The main performance of hybrid EMUs is as follow:
Truck gauge:1,000 mm
Max. Speed:100 km/h
Configuration: 4
Seating capacity: >500
Powered by electric power plus super capacitor (60,000F), when the hybrid EMU brakes, more than 85% of the braking energy can be absorbed by the super capacitor for the use of the train starts next time. It is achieving energy recycling and reducing waste of resources.
CRRC already has a Southeast Asia manufacturing center in Malaysia, and have supplied 75 to 80 percent of the locomotives, coaches and related equipment currently in use in Malaysia
