“A woman who devotes herself to career without amusements, even doesn’t know how to make up.”“A woman who was a kid came from rural area, but now is a bogie designer of the rail transit.”“A woman who is not a professor but has been called “professor” thanks to her superb technical competence.” The bogie designer of ZELC(CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd), Zeng Yanmei, who has many titles and honors such as inspiring idol, heroine. She obtained dozens of authorized patents. And she won The WIPO-SIPO Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention & Industrial Design once, Hunan Science and Technology Progress Award three times, CSR Science and Technology Award twice. In 2016, she was conferred the title of CRRC “Technologist”. In 2017, she won National Women Labor Medal. For these 18 years, she is passionate and concentrated on studying bogie of railway and metro. Many railway vehicles which are marked with “Made in China” run safely and steady in the world because of her efforts.
After interviewing her and her colleagues, the reporter finds that she doesn’t have exceptional experiences. Her achievements just because of a simple action.
Stooping and bowing her head or crouching and raising her head, they are the most common actions of Zeng Yanmei.
Bogie is a small part of the rail transit, but it’s very important. It affects the functions like swing of train, damping, traction brake, determining operation safety. Because the bogie is the same as automobile chassis, at the bottom of the motors, Zeng Yanmei has to take the torch and dedicated tools, stooping and bowing her head for checking it carefully. Sometimes, she worms her way to the gallery at the bottom of bogie, crouching and raising her head in order to make sure the products meet the design requirement. Thus, stooping and bowing her head or crouching and raising her head, they become the most common actions of Zeng Yanmei.
“During the process of bowing or raising my head, I make progress and gain expertise each time.” Zeng Yanmei said that there is no secret for technology R & D, just thinking deeply and reaching the production target as much as possible. For Zeng Yanmei’s efforts, she acquires proficient skills.
With the 18 years work experience, Zeng Yanmei has broken the limit many times. For breaking out of the monopoly on bogie technology, ZELC starts the bogie project of Type B metro at the speed of 120km/h in 2005.
Finally, this bogie project finished ahead of schedule. China broke out of the monopoly and achieved the aim of the autonomy of Chinese metro technology.
Bogie project of Type A metro at the speed of 120km/h what she is responsible for is the first highest speed bogie of Type A metro in the world. Zeng Yanmei and her team adopted series of new technology to realize lightweight of structure and make the project become most advanced bogie of A type metro in the world. The success of project make China to be leader in rail transportation technology and win many orders in dozens of countries and areas.

“Professor Zeng” loves studying that is well-known in ZELC. She concentrates on taking pictures and painting in the overseas rail transit exhibition. When visiting other companies, she is the first one to join it and memorizes all the knowledge in her head. In the office and workshop, her topics are always related to the bogie.
In 2010, Zeng Yanmei accepted the task of the bogie design for Turkey’s light rail train. She created “articulated bogie” design proposal with the team. However, mechanical processing limits is the main problem to realize the proposal and there is no reference in the world. Finally she got the success after many times test, modification and updates. Moreover, she won the 18th WIPO-SIPO Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention & Industrial Design.
In recent years, Chinese rail transit achieved great success in the world. There is no doubt that Zeng Yanmei plays an important role. According to incomplete statistics, Zeng Yanmei helped to achieve more than 5 billion of products and technologies in these years. By sharing technical expertise, the project she worked led to a growth in 10 industries such as steel industry, gear drive and electric machine.
“The global market changes rapidly. We can only capture the most advanced technology to promote the development of Chinese rail transportation.” This is the dream of Zeng Yanmei.
