Skidding in Snowy or Rainy Day? EMU has Sanding System (99% of people do not even know)

On July 1, 2018, the new, longer Fuxing EMU was officially put into operation.

The 16-car configuration with 8 motor cars and 8 trailer cars meets the 350 km/h operational requirements. Friends who know about the car should know that in the bad rainy or snowy weather, the adhesion of the car wheel to the ground is reduced. In the start-up, stop, acceleration or deceleration process, the wheel is very prone to idling or skidding.

If the EMU runs on the railway track, will the wheelset skid or idle in bad weather?

The answer is yes. The skidding or idling of EMU wheelset will not only cause serious damage to wheelset and track, but also affect the EMU safety operation.

Is there any method to restrain the idling and skidding?

The answer is sand. Spraying sand between wheelset and track can increase the adhesion between wheelset tread and rail, and restrain effectively wheelset skidding and locking, but how to spray sand while the EMU running in high speed?

Actually, one black technology product hidden in the long Fuxing EMU can achieve this function, that is, the EMU sanding system independently developed by CRRC SRI.

The EMU sanding system is mainly composed of 3 parts: sanding control box, sanding nozzle, sandbox and sanding unit integration.

The sandbox and sanding unit integration is the main execution component of sanding function. The sanding unit installed at the bottom of sandbox can loosen and fluidize the sand in the sandbox, then spray the sand from the bottom of the sanding unit by airflow.

The sanding nozzle is used to guide the sand flow from the sanding unit and spray it between the wheelset and rail. The rolling length of wheelset on the track per unit time varies with the the change of EMU operational speed, so the demand for the sanding amount varies accordingly. The sanding amount can be adjusted by the input airflow with different pressure which can be controlled by the sanding control box.

Shorten distance and ensure safety

The sanding system can effectively improve the traction and brake reliability of the EMU under severe working conditions. Take the brake distance as an example. The relative tests have shown that when the adhesion condition between rail and wheelset is reduced in severe working conditions, the application of sanding system can shorten the brake distance by more than 20%, that is, the brake distance is 1000 without sanding but less than 800 with sanding. Do not underestimate the shortened brake distance. In case of emergency, if the parking within specified brake distance can’t be guaranteed, the major accident of train collision may even happen and the consequence would be disastrous.

Break monopoly and make innovation

The domestic EMU sanding system is initially monopolized by foreign suppliers. CRRC SRI began to develop the the EMU sanding system products in 2012, which was first installed and applied on CRH3A EMU. Through a few years of development, CRRC SRI has continuously developed and innovated, and has gradually formed a series of sanding system products which can serve as the solutions for users with specific requirements. In the project of sanding system installed on EMU, due to the limited installation space, the sanding device needs to be installed in the wheel axle position where the vibration and impact conditions are worse, and the foreign suppliers have been discouraged by this. CRRC SRI has continuously optimized the product structure, performed comparison tests repeatedly and finally succeeded in providing the users with satisfactory solutions.

At present, nearly half of the existing EMUs in China adopt the sanding system of CRRC SRI, and in Fuxing EMUs, this proportion is more than 80%.
