CRRC SRI’s Energy Storage Device Assists Delingha Modern Tram in Running on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

A few days ago, the first Delingha modern tram formally rolled off the production line and is expected to enter service before the end of the year. By then, it will be the first modern tram running on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and operating at the highest altitude in the world.

Located in the northwest of Qinghai Province, Delingha belongs to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is one of the important cities for the promotion of new energy industry. The Delingha modern tram is equipped with a supercapacitor energy storage device independently researched and developed by CRRC SRI, which fully embodies the concept of green environmental protection.  

The latest lithium-ion supercapacitor is built in the energy storage device for Delingha modern tram, has a cycle life of millions of times, can increase the energy density to three times that of double-layer supercapacitor, can greatly reduce the system’s volume and weight, and decrease the load of entire train in layout and axle weight design.

Delingha has a unique geographical environment with an average altitude of nearly 3,000 meters. It features the high-cold and oxygen deficit, dry air, little rain and wind.In order to adapt to the high-cold environment, CRRC SRI increases the electrical clearance, strengthens the secondary insulation of module and improve the insulation withstand voltage performance of system in the structural design of supercapacitor energy storage device; meanwhile, by optimizing the system air cooling duct, the design can avoid the insufficient ventilation problem of fan due to thin air and ensure the heat dissipation performance of the system; the working temperature of the lithium-ion supercapacitor is extended to make it applicable to the local larger temperature difference between day and night.

The Delingha modern tram project can realize more convenient transportation. CRRC SRI’s supercapacitor energy storage device fully utilizes the advantages of high charging and discharging power and can achieve rapid charging within 30 seconds. The charging can be completed while the passengers get on or off the tram, which provides citizens with a green, carbon-free, high-quality, and high-efficiency travel mode. The ultra-long cycle life of supercapacitor also reduces the cost of maintenance and use of energy storage device.
