China’s “High-speed Rail Chip” Nails Down another Overseas Deal

The“Renaissance” EMU train, China’s high-speed rail icon, is amazing. Its general design and such key technologies as train body, bogie, traction and network are independently researched and developed by China, which has completely independent intellectual property rights over the train. The core parts of the“Renaissance” EMU train like the traction converter---the “heart”, network control system, axial temperature detection system and WTD are all developed by Zhuzhou CRRC Times Electric Co., Ltd. (CRRC Times Electric).

A few developed countries have monopolized the IGBT chip enabling the smooth running of the “Renaissance” EMU train for over 30 years. Three years ago, China made a breakthrough. The IGBT chip developed by CRRC Times Electric has broken the overseas monopoly over the technology and market of high-power IGBT chip. In addition to its application in high-speed rail, the IGBT device is also used in direct-current transmission, smart power grids, electric car and other fields.

Recently, our homemade IGBT got another overseas order. At the beginning of the New Year, good news came from our overseas market. CRRC Times Electric defeated its international competitors regarding IGBT product and won the module order of a converter manufacturer in India again, and this batch of products will be applied to 105 Indian locomotives. This signifies that our independently developed and produced IGBT products has witnessed stable operation in overseas market, gradually won the recognition of international market, and made new progress in occupying international market.

In 2016, depending on the excellent performance of the 1,700V IGBT module, CRRC Times Electric got the order of transforming and upgrading 100 Indian WAG-9 locomotives. For over one year, the IGBT modules have run quite well, and have been highly recognized by the customer.

Recently, CRRC Times Electric got another order of 105 locomotives due to the good performance of this batch of IGBT modules. Before the delivery, these 800A/1,700V IGBT modules had been tested in HXD1C locomotive of Chongqing locomotive depot and in nearly 10 urban rail lines of Kunming and other cities in China, and they had shown exceedingly high performance and reliability.
